REFERENCE AND INFORMATION SERVICES
Looking for answers? The reference staff of the Siuslaw Public Library welcome the opportunity to assist you in your search for information.
- Reference staff can assist you in locating information from A-Z on a variety of topics, including:
automobile prices and reviews
business and demographic data
company addresses and phone numbers
directory information
genealogy
health and medicine
legal information
reader's advisory
school directories and scholarship information
tax forms, federal and state
- If your question cannot be answered here using our local resources, then we will request assistance from the the statewide on-line reference resource,L-Net.
- If the library district does not have the material you need, we may be able to obtain it through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). If you have a library card, we can borrow material from other libraries in the Lane County Library Consortium, (Springfield, Cottage Grove, Fernridge, Junction City and Oakridge) and ORBIS (academic libraries in Oregon and Washington), as well as national searches through the OCLC network. The library district does not charge patrons for interlibrary loans, although some lenders may charge a fee which will be passed through to the patron. In order to use interlibrary loan services efficiently, please provide as much identifying information for the requested item as possible. (Author, title, date published, etc.)
RESOURCES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS:
- Print collections include best sellers, current magazines and newspapers, and special collections including large print, genealogy, Oregon, English as a second language, literacy, consumer information, career education, reference, map and pamphlet files, government documents, and the Frank Herbert collection.
- Youth services collections are housed in two areas: the Young Adult collection, with fiction (including new graphic novels and recorded books), non-fiction and magazines for youth ages 12-18; and the Children's area, with fiction, non-fiction and reference materials for the youngest readers (in Board-book format) to the tweens, with series paperbacks in a special shelving area for easy access. Magazines, videos, music CDS, recorded books, early readers materials, homeschooling resources, parenting resources, toys and preschool theme kits round out the collection for young patrons and their parents.
- Media collections include thousands of videocassettes and DVDs on a variety of subjects both educational and entertaining; recorded books on audiocassette and CD, both fiction and non-fiction; microfilm and fiche of historic local newspapers and Oregon public records; and subscription on-line databases, including EbscoHost (a periodicals database), Heritage Quest (for genealogy research), the Oregonian, and NetLibrary eBooks. These databases are available for use both in the library and from your own computer if you have a library card and pin number.
- Internet resources: In addition to L-Net and the subscription databases, reference staff have made lists of resources available on the Internet for many subjects.
